Working in the Garden

Friday, July 2, 2010
I wasn't too excited about working in the garden because of how it appeared. There wasn't a sidewalk or a clean walking path to stand on. To top it off, how it looked was crazy. I wouldn't have known there was a garden there. It looked unorganized, so I wasn't so excited about working there to begin with. Once the girls (Imari, Whitney) and I started pulling weeds, we began to realize that it wasn't the most difficult work. It was dirty, but a soil-like dirty and not a harmful potent dirt. Imari, who had a big problem helping with the dirt and bugs was doing great. She was doing more work than anyone could have imagined her doing. Whitney was also doing a good job, and even though she didn't like bugs or insects, Whitney got in the dirt and tried her best to avoid them. With the five of us all working slowly, we all got a lot of work done for the community garden and for Miguel (who takes care of the garden). Overall, we didn't mind helping with the garden, and for me, Imari, and Whitney, it wasn't what we expected. I guess in some kind of way it was fun helping out the community. But I wouldn't want to volunteer to help again if there are other cleaner options.

We (Team Woodlawn) volunteered at a community garden a couple of times and so I understand the work required to pull weeds! Although it may have been a rough start, I'm sure you all felt like you really accomplished something at the end of the day!

I'm glad to hear that you guys put in all your efforts and surprised yourselves. Sounds like everyone was out of their comfort zone.

Do you feel a little different about the situation now that you heard about the food deserts on the south side? I mean...even though you might not have enjoyed getting so dirty, do you think it's important that they exist?

And just because you didn't love the gardening aspect, do you have some friends that might love doing this type of work that you could bring to the garden some day?

That was good to help out your community. I know you were proud of yourself for making a better garden.
